hi to everyone, last night just as i switched on the engine it was doin the noise of a diesel b u ti think its comin from the alternator(its that thing on the left top part of the engine if i'm not mistaken eh) and its leaking oil just under the joint of the belt with the engine, Am i correct i n saying that its the alternator as no light showed on the dash and the car drives ok except for teh sound.
Sorry for the long post..btw its a 98 corsa b

alternator would cause a grinding noise if it was that. is it like a clunking noise?

how many miles have you done and what engine is it?

its done 50,000 miles and its a 1.2 serviced regularly, the engine runs ok its that noise comin from the alternator i think, and the oil leaked yesterday from the part where the belt meets the engine so i think its that which caused it

i reckon the exhaust manifold may be leaking, try tightning all your manifold bolts up - if this fixes it, your engine mountings are on their way out

could be the bearings inside alternator, if you trhink its coming from that area
