All it is, is rent payable by the owner of a leasehold property to the freehold owner.

thats because ground rent isnt leasehold.
The leasehold is obviously the way in which you own the property, but ground rent is a further charge you pay yearly. Im almost certain some gated community places probably charge a ground rent to houses that are free-hold for the upkeep of the grounds.

Edinburgh is so goddam expensive
We pay
£650 mortgage (int only)
£120 council tax
£75 electricity
£30 phone and internet
Contents insurance paid all in a oner
Then we have factors as well, which works out around £700 a year
£50 a year for alarm contract

Telewest(phone, net and tv) £35
TV Licence £11
Buildings and Contents Insurance £21
DFS Finance(sofa's) £17
Then food, clothes, going out, petrol, running car(insurance, tax, MOT etc.), savings??
