Hi there every1

My headgasket has gone in my car and exhaust gasses are appearing in the coolant tank even though there isnt a lotta pressure when u take off the collant tank cap. Also the engine "splutters" (eg when I put pedal on gas when in gear engine doesnt accelerate smoothly)

took it to garage who put Wonderweld inside to quick fix problembut I didnt work. Engine still spluttering. They suggested that the job may cost a whopping 1400 pound!! As they suggest there may be damage in the engine block such as a crack??

Is this possible??

My local garage. They say it'll cost that much as they suspect that the engine block may have a crack. But this is only because he wondarweld failed to solve the problem? Do u think they're trying to rip me off??

Right because when you fit a new engine you dont bother with oil, filter, plugs, antifreeze, timing belt kit etc

Oh and i assume its a backstreet garage that doesn't charge vat?

wonderweld is basically like radweld but for engines a cheap short term fix.

As said what engine is it?
Cracked blocks are very very rare tbh, but I would expect headgasket job done properly for around the £500 mark!

the 1.4 is prone for blowing the headgasket between number 4 and the water jacket.

So you wouldnt see any oil in the water or vice versa.

I suggest you whip the plugs out and compare number 4 to the other 3

as above. the 4th cylinder has the extra water jacket close to the dispac end of the head hence why it goes there.heads corrode quite a bit along there aswell. ive had a head or two that has had to be welded along there before being skimmed down to corrosion. for head gasket and bolts, inlet gasket, cambelt, oil and filter etc and a skim + labour your looking at about £300

If it wasn't skimmed last time that would explain why it has gone again!

is there any tips to keep the head in good condition. Garage told me that no antifreeze was in the coolant when they inspected it. Could a inbalance in water/antifreeze cause corrosion?
