Author help! Car Wont Start

I took my carb off the other day, because it wanted a good clean.

Re fitted everything back on, started up no problem, turned it off and a puff of smoke would come up from underneeth the alternator area.

This happened everytime, (could it happen, if the timing is out?)

Anyway, tried starting it again last nite, sounded like it was on 3 cylinders, engine cut off.

Tried again but it tried to start but it wouldnt tickover. It did try to start, but i didnt actually run.

Could it just be something simple like spark plugs?

Cant see why the carb would stop it from starting?

Did you take the carb apart, put it back together correctly?

no, took it off complete, and connected everything back as it should be.

still smoke coming from the bottom of the engine :S, could be the 4-1

take it you replaced the carb gasket?

i didnt take the carb appart, so i didnt have to replace it

aye but isn't there a gasket between the carb and inlet manifold? since you took the carb off the inlet manifold. sometimes the gasket gets ruined.

i took the spi box off, disconnected every pipe/cable.

Then refitted everything back on
