ARGH fucking bellend!
Virgin upgraded me to 10Mbit - hoorah! However, with the Belkin wireless router connected I can only get 5. If you disconnect the router and plug the cable modem straight into the PC - everything's hunky dory and I'm downloading porn like no one's business.
Checked for firmware upgrade for the router already (this thing is yeaaars old) - there is none. Phone Belkin and the guy tells me it's because NAT is used in both the modem and the router - and it needs to be disabled in the modem.
Now I'm far from a networking guru, but something tells me he's talking out of his anus - and if I bought a new NetGear router for example I'd have absolutely no problems at all... Can anyone shed some light?
Cheers

Not sure how the cable one one works but when I moved to O2 recently my Belkin ADSL router only supported up to 8MB. When I used the O2 router it has an ADSL2+ modem built in which supports the higher speeds. You might just need to buy a new cable modem as above. Should be able to get one cheap on ebay etc..

Allan - can't buy a different cable modem, it's property of VirginMedia and it's illegal to use 3rd party hardware on their network (everything after the cable is up to you etc).
Are you connecting via Ethernet to the router? Have you also tried a hard reset of the router (need a pin and press the reset button on the back of the router)?
Personally though, i would ebay for a Linksys, cost you about 20-30 quid and you can use custom firmware like DD-Wrt, Tomato that offer a load more options like QoS etc.

Have you tried changing the (wireless) channel? If someone near you (i.e. neighbour) is using the same channel on their router as you it may cause a conflict.

Didn't know that , On O2 they aint bothered if you use a 3rd party router. If you have problems though they just don't support them.

I can't find anything about it being illegal to use 3rd party modems and have never heard of that before.
They used to lock it to the modem and you had to either spoof the mac or phone them up to change it but not heard of that recently either.
They are the same as anybody else that they'll only support their own equipment afaik.
