A friend turned my computer off by holding the off button down while it was updating to windows service pack 3 (or whatever its called) now when you switch it on it says "fatal system error" does anyone have any idea how I can get all my files off on to my external hard-drive or if this is possible?

Cheers

It does tell you not to do that before you start. You ought to be able to recover the files if you plug the HDD into another computer.

firstly, does your external hard disk have removeable covers? if so, swap the hd out with your own and copy the data you need to another machine.

secondly, do you have a windows xp cd?
If so, boot from it (as if its going to start a windows install), press R when pompted (its the 2nd/3rd screen in).
When you get to command prompt, try:
chkdsk /r
It will check the system files and repair what needs repairing.

I can't get it to boot of the disc at all, I have to use an external disc drive and it just won't boot from it no matter what I do.

What type of disc bay would I need for an old Dell Laptop if I have to go down hat route? Is it possible to take the HD out of a laptop?
