Right, forgive me if this sounds daft as hell...
Complete n00b when it comes to this area - I have a modem at the moment; now my mate has a 'faster' one apparently. Can I just swap the two over or do I have to do some other funky shit?

Your modem/router is only generally as fast as your internet connection.
Probably wont make much difference to download speeds from the internet.

And to answer your question to the full. I presume its a router he's going to give/sell you.
If so, you'd need to input your internet username and password into the new one before it will let you connect to the internet and use it.

I would personally stick with a brand name modem router like netgear or linksys (for home use), but they all do the same job at the end of the day.
