Final drive is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on your crown wheel by the number of teeth on your mainshaft in your gearbox - the higher your final drive the quicker your accelaration - but the top speed will b lower - typical final drives are 4.2/4.5/4.8/5.1
To change the final drive requires a different crownwheel and mainshaft (depending which box your running)
Not quite as straight forward as u though eh!!!

sr's were like thihs, its becasue the 1.2 doesnt have enough torque to drive it on 17's witha huge install i 5th gear.

1.2 SXI is fine on 17" rims in 5th gear. Maybe cos the sxi has a close ratio box. in fact its better on 17's cos it lowers the revs a little when doing 70mph, hence the wee little chicken chaser dosent scream as much! lol. If you want a smaller final drive maybe you should look at fitting the sxi gearbox.

Actually kris is talking about the early 1.2's. Which were 8v and a LOT slower than the 16v. Oh yeah, with 17's on, you are not doing 70mph like it shows, you are doing nearer 76mph.
