It may have been mentioned in here before but a quick search didn't throw up anything.
Am I right in thinking jailbreaking an iPhone doesn't unlock it from a network? I need to do both ideally tbh - it's not something I've done before, but a friends just obtained one and asked me to try and do it!
Any links, tips etc would be much appreciated,
Cheers

Jailbreaking does not unlock the phone.
You CAN unlock 'some' phones using a jailbreak app i.e. after jailbreaking you can install another app which unlocks it
BUT it will only be unlocked while it is jailbroken. If you upgrade the firmware and there is no jailbreak available you loose the unlock.
Depending on the phone the operator may unlock it i.e. O2 will unlock phones in contract for free.

Can you not jailbreak and unlock anything apart from iPhone 4's with 4.0.2 on them?
What iPhone is it Rich?

I don't know which generation it is or what network it's on atm, it's my ex-boss who's got it, so it's not some dodgy stolen phone, but I don't know anything about it yet
Will speak to him and find out, he's not bothered about it being jailbroken, just wants it unlocked, but I wasn't sure what had to be done - obviously the aim is to do it all free!

You need to know if it's an iPhone, a 3G, a 3GS or an iPhone 4. You also need to know which version of the o/s it's running then it's pretty simple to figure it out.
Then it's using these tutorials:

Or these tutorials and downloading the carrier unlock from Cydia when it's Jailbroken:
