Our garden shares a big ash tree with our next door neighbours, who also own their house. When we bought our house we were told we were in charge of responsibility of the back and left fences, which includes their fence (on their left). We want to get rid of the ash tree completely but how would we stand with our next door neighbours?

Would we have to pay for it AND a new fence panel for them? Or split things 50-50? I guess it depends if they want the tree, but ash trees are apparently prone to grow into monsters so hoping to sell the idea to them that way when we eventually discuss it with them..! Any advice would be great!

How big is the tree?

Whos land is the trunk on?

Other thing to think of is drainage as the tree will be drinking a lot of water, so if removed the land will become less dry casuing lawn to become more prone to moss.

It may also be a protected tree meaning it will have a tpo, tree preservation order on it.
I would consult your local council before you even touch it.

tree aspect is a difficult one

You can file a complaint with local Concuil but they normally charge £500 just to process the complaint

The only way you can enforce its removed is when it affects light levels in garden/house or is a safety issue

Your better speaking to the neighbour to see if they will chop it down even if you have to pay half
