It either means the phone doesn't store a judgement on the quality of the fix, or the guy who programmed the software is ignoring it.

Either way, I find it hugely amusing that these great phones have poor data.

He visited Cornwall.

The bulk of the traces are correct but there are a large number of unsecured fixes.

Good article on Google storing Android users WiFi MAC addresses (for their skyhook project) - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/22/google_android_privacy_concerns/
Apparently you can opt out but there is no option in Android

Makes a lot more sense to use private handsets rather than deploying your own cars.

Question is, should Google be collecting this data?
I really don't see the reason apart from highlightly public WiFi hotspots, as it is a completely inaccurate form of location finding. I would imagine cell tower triangulation is a lot more accurate.

Android and Google can do no wrong, where as Apple are worse than hitler because of a file that's stored on your phone and doesn't go anywhere or do anything much. Go figure

Wow, that's a big chip on your shoulder you got there
If you actually read the article, plus the many others, about Google's Skyhook you'd know there are plenty of people complaining about it; usually about the fact that Google say you can opt out of sending this data but there isn't an option to do so (apart from keep WiFi turned off).

Inappropriate use of smileys. Must add more to ensure that people know I'm typing with a hint of sarcasm and bollocks.

Looks like they are creating a google maps competitor.

One thing google is definitely amazing at is the whole maps/earth/streetview thing, will have to be good to properly compete.

Probably not, it was a lead on from the release on positioning stating that they were developing crowd sourced traffic info.
