Right,

I have tried various players and having the same problem with all of them when playing MKV's mostly 1080p rips.

Occasionally the picture will pause (sound will carry on) then all the colours go funny and the picture goes really blocky for a second or two and then everything is ok.

This happens with VLC, media player classic and media player home cinema.

Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting this one?

Does it always happen at the same place or if you rewind is it just random?

Anti virus software (running background tasks)

Run Task Manager (performance tab) see what the load is like.

This was my first thought so I disabled it and the issue did not go away.

Have run task monitor and kept an eye on it, saw a max load of 40% CPU

Plenty of RAM with 3GB

Only thing running in background was SABNZbd well other then any background apps which I guess just Norton 360. Usually generates a pop up when it is doing something though.

1080p is fairly hefty for on board graphics. Not able to suffer 720p?

Mixture of GPU/CPU not man enough to decode on the fly etc.

turn off all background apps, including norton and give it another try, if not, your stuck im afraid.

You'll probably find it'll happen more when alot is going on, i.e a higher bit rate is being decoded.

I have a few 720p rips but have been pursuing the 1080's recently. Dare I say I have started to notice the difference?

Will try disabling Norton.

I guess my laptop is probably not quite up to the Task

I thought it was too but found some geek 1337 haxor site where they tested about 20 different media players with HD content and it came out top.
