Look for SEO - Search Engine Optimisation. I've not done it yet so can't help with any details other than to let you know what you need to investigate. There's multiple things you can do though.

Or if you want to pay search for PPC. Not the cheapest but will bang you straight to the top of google.

Best way is design a well coded and well designed website rich in relative content for the product services.

Most seo methods are out of date and google will ignore most of these methods.

only realistic way is a decent site and wait, once you get traffic it will move up

The way the current algorithm ranks a site is based on how fresh the content is, how relevant it is to the subject of the website and how many people are interested in it. Basically you should have a blog or news section which is kept regularly up to date and shared on social media sites. You need people to come back and engage with your content, so to comment on things and share things from your site.

Other things to do are to setup your business on Google+ and Google Maps, that way you should appear on the right hand side of search results.

Basically, SEO no longer exists (in the traditional sense). If you need to be at the top for certain terms then you're going to need to pay them money for Adwords.

Steve pretty much hit the nail on the head.

There's no tricking search engines these days.

Good sites get good placements. Work on your content.

Obviously you need to follow the very basic steps like filling out meta info for each page.

Where you have much greater influence is in your conversion.
Set up goals for your site.
Do you want people to buy stuff? Request an offer?
Set your goals and look at Analytics data to see how well you convert visitors to goals.

There's no benefit of getting thousands of visitors to your site if they all bounce.
A good conversion rate is just as important as visitor numbers.
