I have access to academic software so can buy all the newest M$ products for £7.15. I have the option of 8 or 8.1, both are called 'Upgrade' but 8.1 reckons it is only compatible with Windows 7.

What I really want to do is completely reformat my laptop and get rid of Windows 7 completely and then reinstall a full version of 8.

What's the difference between the 2?

I think the OP is asking whether they'll be able to do a clean install of 8.1 from an 'upgrade disc' without having to install 7 first. The answer is almost certainly yes - I remember wanting to do a clean install of 8.0 Pro when it first came out and I only had an 'upgrade from 7' disc. It was a faff; I can't remember why, I think it wouldn't activate for some reason. I did it in the end.

Grab the 8.1 Upgrade disc and as Rob mentions, you'll be able to do a clean install with the disc but it won't activate without a workaround - it's fairly straight forward however, Look HERE.

I was told by an ASUS rep in John Lewis that if you have 8 then just upgrade it on MS website to 8.1 for free anyway

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

This is true, but as always, better to start with 8.1 if you can.

Yeah. Would always recommend as clean an installation as possible with the least upgrades possible.

That's exactly what I'm after, nice clean install. I've always had my dodgy 'student' XP install (you know the one with the CD key that everyone and his dog has got ) but the wife uses the laptop for her business so I need it to just work and not have to bugger about getting rid of stupid error messages for her.

I'll go for 8.1, or is the next update going to be official 8.2, because I will probably just wait for that if it is. At the end of the it's only £7 if it doesnt work, but £7 in my pocket is better than someone elses

It's not going to be called 8.2, it's "8.1 Update 1" apparently.

You go to the Store.

Windows 8/8.1 is a pile of wank. I hate it!

It's far from a pile of wank... you just dislike the UI / experience.

Install Classic Shell - problem solved from the user experience side.

If you have a volume licensed copy upgrading from the store wont work you will need original 8.1 media

Derailing a little but yes, it's a bit of a butt ache especially when MDT/System Center doesn't allow you to deploy fully automated upgrades rather each system still requires some user interaction
