Watched a film on it yesterday and it was fine, turned it on just now and fan is running as normal, played 2 songs through PlayStation xmb then it switches itself off and is sitting flashing at me, no dust in PlayStation, unit not even warm as it was only on 5 or so minutes.
Is this usual or what? I could understand if I was stressing it's tits off.

I've just noticed that there was a yellow light before the flashing reds so it's fucked. Just don't understand why as I've never really used the PS3 that much since I've owned it. I'm not so much bothered about the unit dying but it's all the game saves that I've lost. It frequently came up with which games had been backed up when I switched the unit on but are they backed up to my psn account or to the HDD?

I just read that it will back up to my PS+ account but only if you activate the feature for every game individually, so I doubt I've done that.

You can probably get it to work a little while if you can be bothered taking it apart and putting some fresh thermal paste on it... takes about 15 minutes and will probably give it a few hours of life if you need to get anything off it! Potentially it can fix it forever but I never found that.

I have considered taking it apart, I've taken a couple apart before and fixed them short term, if I can be arsed

Ok so I found some old back up data from my now broken PS3 from a few years ago on my laptop. Put it in my new PS3 slim that I bought today on a usb stick and the save data file doesn't show up in my game save backup option

You have to be very specific with folder names with a PS3. For instance to get video files to work they must be in a folder named VIDEO or else it won't recognise it. I assume it's the same for data, though I haven't used it for that before.

When the files transferred from the PlayStation, it gave the folder a default name called SAVEGAME but I'll have to look to see if the folders need to be within another folder of a specific name etc.
