spax are very good for the money but i wouldnt reccomend them as i buckled a front shock the other night with a very little bump. upon removal and inspection they seem pretty weak and there seems to be fuck all strength in the shocks at all
as for other makes:
eibach are good
bilstein are the dogs bollocks
jamex are shite
dunno bout any others really

bilstein yellows.
jambo has the black budget ones and doesn't rate them at all.
billstein or koni with eibach springs is apparently an awesome combo on most cars.

I did a whole project based on Bilstein, they have a fairly normal construction for the most part, but have a compressed nitrogen pocket under an aluminum bung - this keeps the hydraulic fluid inside from foaming (when gas bubbles develop in the liquid) as the internals move whilst driving - and so retains an even and consistently excellent damping effect throughout their lifespan.
