could be a number of things, one of the worst could be valve guides about to break... my m8's corsa tapped for a while then a valve guide broke causing the piston to hit the valve (and bend it of course) and push it back up thru the tappet. Happened twice! Could just be noisy tappets tho, his was an X14XE engine just like yours

i had a 1.4 16v which had this noisy tapping sound. turned out to be the water pump. sounded like the engine tappets tho. valves or something.

Mines tapping too, has got a oil leak tho so when i hear it tapping i usually just chuck a bit of oil into it.
If its anything else other than oil i'm not even gonna bother replacing it will just get a new car

Probably the only person ive heard of thats been unlucky enogh to have this happen, it could well be big ends but its unlikely, generally itll make a lot of noise all the time with the big ends gone or going, do an oil change always good anyway, and put some decent oil in if its still bad after the oils had a chance to get round take it in to your garage mate. mines been doing it when its cold for a while when i do an oil change its fine for a few months dont know why just seems to work on mine. im refurbishing my engine so if i find anything suspect ill let you know
