Got a new sub and am going to build a box tomorrow and been told by them that the box wants to be a cubic ft.

depends on the subs specs. my 12W3V2 is between 0.75 and 1.25 cu ft sealed, so 1 cu ft is fine if you want a tight sound from a 12 and the sub is reccomended for that size.

so i make the box one cubit ft then. does taht mean the actual size of the box or does it need to have that much volume when the subs in?

Ur on about ur RE SE yeh? If you got the 12" then the size of the box is recommended to be 1 cu ft for sealed, designed for SQ.
If you want more loud than sound quality, then the recommended size is 1.8 cu ft ported.

that was a good question tho; is it size of box, or size of box - speaker size. ive always assumed its just box size..

yeh fella, i think ill go for the 1cubic ft. this is the actual size of the box though? not air thats in it after the sub?

In your case, to get 1 cu ft, using 18mm MDF, your external box dimensions would need to be 12x12x17 inches

yeah 1 cuft means there needs to be 1 cu ft odf airspace inside the box with the speaker mounted, so yes the displacement of the sub needs to be taken into account.

they dont conflict. If a manufacturer gives you dimensions for a box for a specific sub then they will have done as i said and taken the subs displacement into account.
if you design your own box u need to include it otheriwise the volume at the end will be out.

If JL 12 W3d2 subs need between 1.0 cu ft and 1/25 cu ft to work best, would a stealth box with 0.95 cu ft be no use??

My 12W3 is in a 1.25 cu ft box atm, with the sub in its 1.18cu ft, and the box is too big IMO.
Im gonna be building mine to be almost spot on 1 cu ft each box, with the sub displacemenrt taken into account, so box will be 1.07cu ft.
