i took the HU out and had a fiddle with all the connections .etc and pushed them in tight and the whining has gone but i now have a low dull monotonous tone... i'm thinking its a lose connection, what can i do about the grounding issue Richie?

If it doesn't whine with the radio then your HU is knackered.
