What checks can you do BEFORE you buy it , bear in mind it would be out the car ?
And what work is essential before converting , i.e timing belt on a 1.6 etc ?

check hoses for mayo type stuff, get this when oil and water mix, not good. Also check for general leakyness, rocker, head, sump etc.
Ask for receipts for previous work done, especially if the seller says 'its had blah blah etc etc' No receipt, its not been done imo.

I bought mine with no reciepts etc, jsut with a good word done about 3k and seems alright so far..

turn the engine over by hand with the cam cover off to check timings ok and remove spark plugs. listen for anything that scrapes or knocks. check the condition of the cams and condition of the spark plugs and colour of the oil to see if its been looked after.

With private sales it's a bit of a risk... I would do a full gasket change and clean out, timing belt water pump and idlers and possibly the bearing shells before fitting the engine, but it's up to you... Just depends on the milage too...

good advice. By all means get the engine cheap but while its out and easy to get to change as many things as you can. Big end shells are a great shout especially while the engine is out. Shells are pennies and its piece of mind as well. Same with the head gasket. Wont cost much and also a doddle to do with an engine on the bench.

I bought my xe with receipts etc... still a quick checkover revealed blown rocker gasket, dizzy seal. changed cambelt as matter of course, that way i know and can prove when it was changed

Rough costs only:
Upper and lower gasket set: £50
Timing belt kit: £80-100
Water pump: £30
Bearing shells: £30
Big end bolts: £10-20
Head bolts: £20-30
So not much of a huge outlay. Will take you a day or two - paint the block up black or blue too

Picking it up tommorow
Not too sure about doing bearing shells etc tho , think I may cause more harm than good

might as well check them. easy job to do, remove sump, remove caps, inspect shells, replace, tighten caps to the correct torque.
