if you overfill your oil slightly will it come out of the exhaust or will it mean by by head gasket?

Depends on how much oil you put in, shouldnt come out of the exhaust though! Slightly overfilling you may get away with, but major overfilling and running the engine and driving as normal can lead to a new engine being needed

When an engine is overfilled with oil, the crankshaft hits the oil in the pan and causes it to foam, mixing it with air. The conatminated oil cannot properly lubricate the engine and this can lead to rapid engine failure.

That said, you may hear a noise which is the valve lifters collapsing when the air contaminated oil hit them. This can generate quite a clatter but won't cause much harm as long as you shut the engine down quickly.

Dipstick is the obvious answer, to check the level, but if for whatever reason thats not possible, run it and soon after the engine will make a load of noise which is a giveaway.

But i dont see why go to that much troubke when its easy enough to check the dipstick
