yeah i was very surprised how loud mine is.
Also mine has a few problems really need to take it back to the store can never be rsed though lol.

Its not the fans, its the DVD drives that make the noise. If you play an arcade game the system makes near zero noise.
The easy way to prove this is the case is to put your hand behind the system while it on the dashboard and making no noise. Feel the amount of airflow? Now do the same while a game is running. No more air is coming out of the system, meaning the fans arent spining any faster, so the noise cant be from those.

yes it is, i dont use mine for DVD's/HD DVDs as with all consoles i have had they make a noise.
it also depends on when yours was made as i think they changed the DVD drive to a tosh/samsung on later models

topshot shut up about later models etc making stuff up mines a christmas model and it's rather loud. although isn't as bad when watching dvd's ive noticed. only notice how loud it is when i have no sound on which isn't often enough to bother me

ryan they swapped from hitachi to samsung iirc or vice versa.

If its a Samsung drive, you can have the firmware flashed on the drive to reduce the read speed from 12x to 4x. Makes a big difference in the noise it makes, but means games take a couple of seconds longer to load

Same here, but as far as im aware, theres no firmware to slow the drive down
