I looking to reinstall windows xp on my computer and can get an xp professional disc with no key. would the key on my computer work if the laptop originally came with basic xp not professional?

You need a XP Pro key for XP Pro, or a XP Home key for XP Home.

I think if you look on the CD for winnt.sif it has the product key in it.

winnt.sif is the unattend file, if its in there is should have installed using that key automatically.

download a disc, thats what i did, and used the girlfriends key,

You have a key for Home though, which means you'll need a Home ISO.

Then ideally you need an OEM version if this is an OEM sticker which it probably is.

I had this exact problem - http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/viewthread.php?tid=371888

Get a Home ISO then when it comes to activation phone them up and tell them you've only installed it on one computer and whatever they ask that relates to piracy. They're just checking that you're not activating a number of times with different computers.
