okie dokie, my other computer, got unplugged the other day, and today i plugged it back in and basically, the packard bell boot screen comes up and stays there, it wont do anything other than that, theres no flashing of the little loading light in the front, the fans going like the clappers still though, but none of the buttons work on the keyboard i.e. at the bottom of the screen it says [esc] to exit [f2] to setup [f8] to what ever it says, and pushing any of these doesnt work, or do anything. its just sits on that screen untill you hold the power button to turn it off....
is it the cpu thats decided to break? ive put different ram in to see if it was that but it isnt, does the same thing still.
a quick answer would be sweet
thanks guys n gals
Dave.

Usually the same as a car fob, CR2032.

Not all motherboards have the same type, whip off the cover and have a look.

I actually just replaced mine yesterday due to the clock losing time, it was 4 years old anyway.

Duff batteries can sometimes cause poor startup issues or screen hangs.

Also disconnect from the board any non essential drives, spare HD's. CD-Roms, disc drives, PCI cards etc.. and try a reset. Remove one ram stick at a time and try each one in turn (more than one) etc..

Try and borrow a spare power supply to test again.

If not battery then as above check the PC by running it with minimal hardware. Also remove all non essential USB devices.

Can you get to the bios?

If its getting past the POST, then you might have a dead hard drive, especially if you just unplugged it whilst it was on?

kurt - yup the keyboard is connected well

drax - no cant do anything in relation to the bios, it starts up, fan kicks in, then stays on the very first grey screen saying packard bell with the press [esc] to escape [f2] setup [f8] 'cant remember'
wont move from there, and pushing the keys dont work, it didnt get turned off while it was on, it got turned off, then unplugged from the wall, while some work was being done on the electric meter, then plugged it back in today. what car you drive drax lol (sittingbourne lol)

ssj - ill have to find it lol!

Unplug the keyboard and see if it bombs out. If it still does the same thing then id say an IDE device was shagged (meaning ur hdd or cdrom).

Then after doing the keyboard test... unplug the IDE cable for the HDD and see if it gets past where you are now. If it does, bye bye data and new shiny hdd time

Ah I didnt realise you were from sittingbourne as well, I drive a orange corsa or a 200sx when its on the road.

Id offer to take a look at you but im moving house in 2 weeks completly snowed under what with boxing things up, and ive 2 pc's here I have to fix.

Educated guess would be that the hard drive is shagged, pop into bare bones in town and find out how much a 160GB or what ever size hard drive you want will cost.

Failing that, order one off ebuyer, put it in, take the old one out, install XP on it if it all goes well, plug in the old hard drive as a secondary / slave, and you should be able to pull any information off of it, It could just be the XP install which is shagged as it does that alot with cold power offs!

If no luck then I can take a look at the PC but i'tll be £30!
