If i Standby my computer the screen goes off fine but the pc itself stays on (fans still going, power led on the front still on etc) and if i press the power button it wakes the screen back up.

I know i could simply turn it off but i prefer to standby it, any ideas

Do you want it to hibernate or standby?

Go to control panel » power options and have a tinker.

It seems like you want to put it into Hibernate rather than Standby.

well, on my old (standard setup, no power tweaking) i press the button on my keyboard that sleeps the PC and everything basically shut down and u had to press the power button to get it to come back on again (moving the mouse etc did nothing) and the whole computer was off, fans and everything. It wasnt a state of hibernation and it was more of a state of deep sleep if u get me, but now only the monitor goes off, its very strange?

vista hibinates wen u press what most people would think is the shutdown in start menu! also on one of teh windows updates this week their was a powersaving tool which basicly changes all ur fukin settins so if u dnt touch ur pc for an hour it hibernates it! meanin if ur downloadin its rather annoyin until u realise what it is! so many ppl ringin up wrk askin y it started doin it! am sure microsoft try to piss people off on purpose

danny if u want oyur pc to switch off by pressing one button on your keyboard why don't u allocate a spare button on your keyboard to do that (asuming u have akeyboard with shortcuts buttons).

i've got a logitech keyobard and on mine i have a few short cut button. if i go into the logitech software that came into it i can set one of the buttons so if i press it the pc turns off

There's different levels of suspend. Suspend (S3) should turn off drives/fans etc. Suspend just keep the RAM powered (and refreshing) so the system comes back more quickly. Hibernate saves the contents of RAM to disk so takes a bit longer to come back.

Check your BIOS settings and make sure standby mode is set to S3 rather than S1 (deeper sleep).

Vista won't suspend completely if it's doing something, i.e. my media center will just turn off the screen if it happens to be recording.

tried that but in BIOS there doesnt appear to be any settings related to standby. There was a 'Suspend to RAM' which i made Auto and tried it and i still had the same problem so ive put it back to default, any other suggestions?
