With winter coming up and the car being locked away. Already found myself sitting in the house bored as fook.
Going to buy myself a new console, my ps2 is a bit outdated now.
Which one though? Iv played both, but not really enough to make a desicion.

People rave about the PS3 having far superior CPU (Cell)
Xbox has a 3-core PPC CPU.
PS3 has a Single core PPC CPU (but had 7 seperate SPU Cores (6 of which are available to be used.) Each SPU core has only 256k of memory however, so programs have to be small enough to fit when required. This also does not help development of the games (specifically in regards to debugging) as you quickly run out of room for any information when needed, especially depending on how the programs are compiled.
PS3 will outperform the 360 in some mathematical routines, but there pretty much on-par with each other.
Xbox is ATI Graphics, PS3 is Nvidia (very similar capabilities)
PS3 has 256Mb RAM with 256Mb Video RAM, but it can use video ram as system ram if required. Xbox only has 512Mb system ram but only 10Mb on the graphics side. It does utilise the system ram for graphics.
Only real benefit for the PS3 is the fact it has BluRay, and that given the new crop of games, they are becoming extremely more difficult to fit onto a single DVD. BluRay will also allow for more textures to be loaded/streamed into the levels etc, compared to DVD. So in about 12 months, the PS3 will start to edge forward in regards to complexity and design of levels & other aspects of the games I reckon.
But the 360 still wins hands-down in regards to the catalogue of games IMO.

fanboys vs fanboys on here mate. You'll be lucky to get a decent answer.
I'd get the one with the games you'd play. Some have both the same games, They also both have exclusives.
Get on Play.com and see what you think.
I have both. My 360 is gathering dust at an alarming rate. I like my films so the Blu-Ray on the PS3 is a massive bonus. I liked my 360, but it's let me down too many times. I'm on my 3rd 360 in less than 2 1/2 years.

I was at a devs conference last week, so was speaking to lots of developers and companies about it (even people from MS and Sony too) quite interesting really!
But yeah, reliability issues of the 360 are also a factor in it. Admittedly PS3 does cock up too, but no where near as often as the 360 does... (plus from what I've read, Sony are shit hot on the whole warranty side of things)

I have a 360, my dad has a ps3. As paul says the current crop of games look exactly the same on both consoles.
If you are looking for cheap fun you can get a 360 with a few games and wireless controllers for £150/£170 delivered now, whereas ps3's are still well over £200 with only 1 controller, your choice

£35 to play online and it's the same price.

I'll just throw in since we are admitting the graphics are the same, the ps3's can only get even better, the 360 is at it's limit.

360 - cheapest console on the market (out of wii and PS3)
yeah, the 360 may hit its limit this year but the next generation console would have been released by mircosoft as the PS3 finally has games which fulfill its spec
I have both consoles... and I probably spend the following hours on each one
360: 2-3 hours a day
PS3: 10 hours in the pass 10 months
pew pew pew pewwwww

so true!!!
it took Sony months to release Metal Gear Solid 4 and as you said, Gran Turismo is no where to be seen. Its so bad that Song had to release that GT5 Prologue just to remind gamers of the GT series
These are two major games and the only two which I can think of atm that are exclusive to the PS3. Either of which I am bursting to buy tbh
pew pew pew pewwwww
