Im taking a look at a mates computer as it has a problem, during the boot sequence (just after the xp loading logo) it blue screens, but doesnt stay up long enough to read any error messages. just reboots to the BIOS loading screen :/ tried safe mode and last known good config; both do the same blue screen n reboot. what can i do?

Press F8 after the POST screen and see if there is an option for "Disable automatic restart" or something along those lines, I can't remember the exact wording. If there is then press enter, then next time the error happens it won't reboot the PC so you can read the code.
If you can't do this (the option isn't always there) then what I would do is put the HDD in another PC as a slave drive then open up the latest minidump and see if it can tell you what's going wrong. You need a special program to read minidumps, if you don't have it then let me know and I'll u2u you my email address and I'll open it for you.

Before all that its worth re-seating the RAM etc and trying to blow out some dust from the case

Remove everything but the essential, 1 sitck of ram, 1 hard drive, no dvd drives, and use trial and error, if it doesn't boot with the minimum then it's not good.
Reset the BIOS to minimum settings as well

sorted now =] used the repair consol on the xp cd. "chkdsk /p" then "fixboot"
