put two 13mm nuts on lock them against each other and turn the nut closest to the head anti clockwise ,done the trick for me might wanna lube them up first with some wd40

wd40 is going to be your friend here!! if your removing them so they can be replaced then use a stud extraction socket and use the 2 nut method putting the new ones in

Is a stud extraction socket just a socket with a LH thread inside it Richardhha?

I have one of these for removing threads, Use it with a rachet it and the black wheel turns tighter on the stud until it locks on to it.
It ruins the thread of the stud though so they can't be reused.

no a propper stud extractor one that wont snap studs easely look like spark plug sockets with a set or rollers inside that when undoing the stud grip it so you can remove it..

I've never snapped a stud yet with mine, Price difference was what made me get the universal one.
Done loads of stud with no problems.
