i'm wanting to upgrade my home PC, it's mainly used for internet, photo's and the use of card making software.

so would it be worth building something to a very decent spec that'll last for a few years

OR

start looking for a decent of the shelf PC

i've about £600 to spend.... i'm not sure this will be enough for a custom build if that's the better option.

OR Third option

would it be better to just upgrade the ram, would it be possible to upgrade the prossesor?

what about operaing system would it be worth a swap to windows 7?

spec of current PC

Windows xp home edition

pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz

512 of RAM

70 gb harddrive (only half full)

Thank's for any help and advice.

Processor upgrade depends on the motherboard and I'm not to good on the intel chips.

I would personally go for something like this !

Titan Xenomorph

Custom building it

Intel core i3 @ 4.0 ghz
HD 5770
Coolmaster Case
PSU

Overclockers and ebuyer are good places anyway.

I custom built my PC for about £450, all I had to start with was the case and monitor. When I built it it was pretty good too (still is imo) but tbf I don't play recent games or anything on it, the most strenuous thing it does these days is Photoshop.

There's not much in it now.

For myself I'd still custom build but I've started recommending dell desktops now.

I built mine about 2 years ago now for around £600 and it's still really good, plays new games perfect, never misses a beat and the fact I can just swap something whenever I want is good.

Have you had a look around www.overclockers.co.uk? You can customise any of the options they've got on there.
