Find a friendly MOT tester.
Failing that take it to a garage

new cat, even if all else fails it will get it through the mot with brute force from the cat cleaning it

no problem mate atleast that will get you back on the road, but you will need to do something to sort whats going on in the engine otherwise you will just knacker this cat aswell and it will fail again next year, unless this was just a dodgy cat, but either way i'd be giving it a good service and trying to find the cause of the misfire, that could be causing unburnt fuel to travel into the cat and burn in the cat itself, which melts the cat and prevents it from working, see this all the time at work on misfiring cats, then they dont get it sorted and the cat fails again at the next mot

get the fault codes read that would be a great start, but atleast if you put the new cat on then you can have the car on the road legally and dont have to worry bout plod pullin ya over everytime you take the car to the garage
