PS3 (Original 60GB, out of warranty) decided to YLOD on me the other day and just wondering if anyone has managed to fix theirs? If so, what did you use a heat gun to reflow or did do the 'stick it in the oven' method? Also how long did the 'fix' last for? I've heard people getting anything from a few days to another year or so but it appears to be pot luck.

A friend of mine done it recently with a heat gun, lasted two days, done it again and has been fine for over 6 months. Worth a bash anyway!

Done 3 times...

1) Lasted about 3 days

2) Lasted about 3 weeks

3) Lasted less than 24 hours!

4) Gave up and sold it on eBay for £65.

Sounds that it could be a bit hit or miss on how long it lasts although it now appears the old man can get the board properly reflowed at work, so will see how that goes.
Cheers all though.....

I did it properly using the guide and it fixed it. Didn't know how reliable it would be though, so put it on eBay and got £90 for it.

Done the fix on mine and worked all of 30 minutes, make sure the thermal compound you get is SILVER, and heat it properly when applying make sure its evenly spread and that the CPU and GPU are contacting the Heatsinks properly, if it doesn't work i'de suggest selling it for parts.

It had an hour and a half on F1 then 2 1/2 hrs of bluray today, the fan's only ticking over and all's well at the minute.

It's an 80GB PS3 by the way.

These 'fixes' are pointless in my experience, needs proper BGA reflowing - none of this sticking it in the oven/heating it up with a heat gun and hoping for the best nonsense.

The solder is also weak, they use lead-free solder when they're made. When it's repaired properly, lead solder is used to make the joints stronger and less prone to getting 'dry' after being heated up so many times during use.

Generally pointless but my 40GB ps3 has lead free solder and gets used a lot and has been fine since new (3 years ago) I know many repaired ps3's lasting into the 18 month point now.
