it should have a restore partition if its a hp. switch it on and hold F9 ( i think) till it boots to the boot manager screen then select it to boot from the restore part of the hdd.

have you tried to change the order in which the laptop boots up? Ie select the small partition on the hdd to get it to boot from the restore data?

Do you have a Windows 7 (or whatever OS your running) CD? Have you tried simply formatting and starting fresh? Or is that something you need to avoid doing?

MBR (master boot record) is probably corrupt, or your hard drive is dead. The former is usually down to a boot sector virus, the latter just general hard drive failure.

Well,
The missus turned it on this morning. Hit f11 on boot, restored it to last week and all was well.
4 hours later it went into limp mode then blank with 'operating system not found'
Again.
I'll have a memory stick handy next time it works

Might be a boot sector virus.

Got it going this morning. 20 minutes later it turned itself off and won't boot now for love nor money
Anybody know a decent place around Bristol who can look at it?
