Strip it down and reflow the CPU/GPU/RAM; plenty of tutorials on Youtube.
A few people on here have had success but i did one using both a heat gun and reflowing machine, and it failed.

Which case either purchase another or send it off to someone, the latter being pretty expensive (when i looked at it, it was around £100 + del).

I fixed mine 5 (iirc) times i got pissed in the end an bought a 320 slim - did a quick repair and ported all the data between the two.
They do have a removable HDD but they are non transferable between ps3's from what i hear.
To top that off the whole data transfer was a pain.
Youtube and google are your friends in this instance

It's potentially possible with working consoles but simply pulling the drive out of one and sticking it in another won't work as the drives are encrypted to the console (had this issue when my brothers original 60GB went belly up).

The affected chips need to be properly BGA reballed - not with a hot air gun/hairdryer/oven or whatever the Internet thinks is a good (cheap) idea...

The HDD is dead !
1. The hard drive would be reformatted, which means all data is gone.
2. The downloaded content from the playstation store is copyright protected. It can't be copied over no matter what. You can however redownload them onto your slim with your account. just go to your downloads list of your account and you'll see everything you've downloaded before and then redownload it from there.
Found that on Playstation US forum.
Might be better to get a 360, console will be cheaper and Microsoft seem to have a very good custom support team if anything goes wrong.

Yeah, forget all the ps3 games and blu-rays you've got and get a different brand console

Hard drive is of no real use in another PS3 (as said, due to the encryption) but it could be useful as an external drive if you get a 2.5" caddy for it. As for removing it, there is a 'door' on the side that you remove which reveals the hard drive cage (unscrew and slide out).
As for the disc - switch the PS3 off (on the back of the unit), hold the eject button and switch the PS3 back on; it'll power on/fans will be spin up and eject the disc.

It is a PS3 'fat'? You sure you held the button long enough (like in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKGU35FKSpY)?

I'd get doing a Google-fu on it and seeing if there is another way of ejecting the disc, as i'm all out of ideas unfortunately.
