Posting on behalf of a mate, he has recently bought a 02 plate 1.2 Corsa C with 87,000 miles on the clock. However, recently he has been having trouble with it. He has had the following problems, the oil light flickers on/off and it is overheating quite badly. It was leaking oil but that was sorted by changing the Oil Pressure switch. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Any help would be appreciated.

any coolant loss? if so suspect gasket between block and timing case. it may of been badly treated by previous owner, lack of oil changes, etc. these engines sludge up quick if not looked after.

Agree with davegreen .. check for any gunge inside oil filler cap and moniter the coolant level in the coolant /water tank check all your hoses to see if any leaks to rad/engine block... good luck.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Davegreen - I think there has been some coolant loss. He also said to me when the car overheats, the coolant starts bubbling and the coolant all comes back into the water tank.
Also, there does seem to be some gunge inside the oil filter cap.

sounds like head gasket but may just be seal between block and water pump/timing case. i'd do both and give it a decoke, new timing chain, head skimed while its apart to be sure. seen a few of these engine fail like this now. if you let the presure out of the header tank carefull when its over heated then refit the tank cap and start the engine does the cooling system instanly presurise? hoses get hard? if so its head gasket or maybe even cracked/ damaged head.
