Good content automatically gets a good placement on Google.

Be sure your meta titles and keywords correctly corresponds with the content of each individual page.

Set up a Google Analytics account to keep track on your visitors and their behaviour.

If you're completely green it might be a good investment to have your web agency come by and give an introduction to basic SEO. Most proper agencies will do this for a small charge if you've already purchased a page with them.

There are some good SEO companies out there too, but unfortunately there's even more rotten ones.

Other than that, Google your questions and you'll find thousands of blogs etc. on the subject.

Google Analytics and Google Webmasters is a must.
As Balling said, good content, primarily discussing and mentioning the words you want to be found for will go a long way.

If you want to be found for 'left handed widgets UK', then make sure you site features this.

Theres a lot of discussion as to whether keywords and meta information makes any difference anymore, but certainly wouldn't do any harm.

Add your strongest search term (and most relevant) to your title pages, as above your index page should read "Widgets Are Us - UK Supplier For Left Handed Widgets".

Some other useful stuff, try and get yourself listed on http://www.dmoz.org/ and read up on http://forums.seochat.com
The forum is full of people asking similar questions with more technical replies.

To start with I would look to use a ppc system and sponsored links whilst you develop your SEO to allow better organic searches, someone like Google Adtrak would be able to set it up.

Relevancy is key to SEO, plus doing all the basics as already described.

Try http://www.seomoz.org/. Don't go subscribing, instead keep an eye on their blog and subscribe to their RSS. There's plenty of info on there.

They also have a good and in depth guide.

How old are your domains?

New domains start off with low search volumes that aren't that competitive to help get recognized, ranked & indexed, then go for the big ones. Keyword research is going to play a major part in your success.

Don't be afraid of going for geographical searches as you're only local.

Try and use 'niche' (focus on geographical locations or very specific subjects) combinations of keywords (title tag content also mixed into main content but not repeated)

Plus become a preem and put a link in your signature, link building helps - plus you're helping this site too!

Link building in such a way isn't a great thing anymore, as Google is getting wise.

PR is also good, using sites like PR Web and getting back links that way.

Unfortunately there is no holy grail to SEO but do the fundamentals right and it should help.

Regular updating of the site won't go a miss.

thanks for all the replies, helped quite a lot so far, a lot of this stuff is quite heavy reading

Our main website has been live for about 8 months and doing well but just not ranked well, and not showing up on searches etc, we also have lots of other domains that link to it and one well ranked that could link to it also.

It is a property rental, sales website based in Phuket Thailand, so it needs to show well in many other countries aswell, namely scandinavian, russia, Uk etc

Very much this.

Link building is important, but Google looks critically at the linking site to determine it's trustworthiness. Linking to a property rental site from a car site will do little to nothing.
If anything it actually just decreases the value of any CS page the link is on, as it's completely out of context and makes the page look irrelevant.

Alex, try getting in contact with relevant bloggers in the countries, where you want to rise in ranks. Tell them about your site and ask if they want to write a feature about you, possibly at a fee. Articles like that accompanied with a link are pretty priceless in terms of SEO. Given that said blogs are well ranked them selves.
It can be a difficult task to accomplish, though.
