im toying with some ideas for a boot build. Basically i need to know - does the shape of the sub enclosure matter? I understand they have to be of a certain volume. I would like to make a very flat and long box rather than the more square shape which is the norm. Would i have any porblems with this.? thanks.

Nope can be any shape you like... so long as correct internal volume. Apparently perfectly square boxes can cause problems with sound wave reflections but hey...?

i want to build a box that basically looks like a T from a side on angle, cause i need quite a big volume, that sound ok for sound?

i gotta do it this way cause i want to put the bottom half of the box down the spare wheel hole, and spread the top T part across abit of the boot floor ....

Mate do what ever shape you want, so long as it has the correct internal volume, their is at least 1-2inches clearance behind the magnet and it SEALED properly.

If you wanna use your spare wheelwell as a box then you wanna mask off the entire well and use some resin and fibreglass matting to build a moulded box. Put an 18mm MDF lid on, seal it and hey presto!

Make sure you build it to manufacturers specced volume like Tom says, subs usually have a recommended range for sealed and ported boxes. i.e. 1 - 2.3 cu ft.

Jamie -

cheers for the info on the enclosure

so do you just build the fibreglass mattig up around the edges of the spare wheel well?

how would you secure the MDF lid down? screw through the metal?

cheers

Once you've covered your entire boot in masking tape, yeah, do the old resin and matting thing until you get a hard shell.

Once it's set and removable go about building up the layers. You can do this with more matting of fibrefill if you like.

As for the lid, I've found the best was is when you've got a reasonable straight and thick rim at the top of the mould then put a load of fibrefill neatly around the top and drop your 18mm board on to seal the box up. It doesn't matter it the board doesn't cover you boot because you can screw the sub into the board and then place a 12mm fret over the top so your sub is flush with your false floor fret.

Finish thickening up the box and seal the top on properly, cut a hole out for your sub, drop it in and put you fret on and you have a custom made box and false floor.

good stuff, but what's the masking tape for?
is it so you can remove the box from the car once i've got the shape?

Yeah, or your box will be in your car, permanently. You'll NEVER get it back out again if you resin straight onto the metal.
