open up WINDOWS messenger, not MSN Messenger and go Tools > Options then tick/untick loads Windows Messenger up when windows starts.
Job done.

IF you've got XP Pro, you can set a policy to ban it from opening.
If you simply delete it, it slows Outlook Express down.

Removal of windows messenger is under the add/remove COMPONENTS part of control panel, not the add/remove programs. It works fine on SP1 and SP2.
Go to control panel, add/remove programs, click add/remove windows components on the left, let it search, then go right to the bottom of the list it gives you, and uncheck the box for windows messenger. then click next
