Author mfd - got a new one that works, but goes dim if I turn my headlights on?

After month of having a mfd that turned itself on and off (pins needed soldering) I decided to get a new one. I have a clock, but alas turn my headlights on and it goes very dim?!

Any ideas?

Its supposed to

When you have your headlights on it is obviously dark so it dims the display so it isnt as glaring and distracting

have you got a little dial that spins underneath the same dial where u turn main lights on

yep, but its on full brightness. My dials are real bright but its just frustrating I cant read the clock lol. Maybe some new bulbs

you could just cut the wire that goes to 12v when the lights are on. Its unlikely to be the bulbs.
