Remember seeing a thread on here not long ago...cant seem to find it again and there is no search function...
Anyway...background is...I have been offered a 6 week old Iphone 3G 8/16 GB (cant remember) for less than £200. I am currently in a contract with Orange which has over a year to run. I am happy with my current contract as its very cheap I get loads of texts and loads of calls..plus free data and internet etc...
All I am looking to do is unlock the Iphone so I can use my Orange contract in it... I have a windows laptop and a MAC to download the software to...
Is it possible?
Am I likely to brick it and waste nearly £200?
Is it better to do it on a MAC or a windows machine?
How does my Itunes etc sync with the phone unlocked?
Answers on a postcard please...
P.S. I have had a quick look at a few websites but want to here the opinion of someone who has actually done it...where they got the software from and how the phone has functioned on another network after it?

They have just released the tool to unlock it, however, I would recommend switching to o2 and ditching your orange contract
Its easy to jailbreak, click click.. done. I've only ever done mine on windows vista and its very straight forward.
Syncing wont be an issue no matter what state your phone is in, i.e jailbroken/unlocked.
They have recently upgraded the baseband software on the Iphone, so you will need to check what version of firmware is running. If your friend has put the latest firmware on straight from apple I think you might struggle to unlock it.

I still have over a year to run on my current contract...that isn't an option.

As Bart said, the iphone dev-team are releasing an unlock patch for the iphone 3g on new years, but like said, this only applies to the 2.1 firmware. So if the iphone has been updated to 2.2 then you're pretty much screwed for the time being.
You can also use a simturbo (ebay, about £10) and they are suppose to work. I've also heard plenty of problems with these......

If it's been activated then - Go into Settings > General > About. Scroll down. Your firmware is listed (will state 2.x etc)
If it hasn't then - enter *3001#12345#* and the press call. Will list a firmware version like 04.02.13_G. Simply google the number and you'll be able to tell what version it is.

Simturbo (example) basically sits between your simcard and the iphone and just makes the iphone thinks it's still on O2.

Not totally true, if they guy is up to speed with things and didnt patch in a particular way, it is possible to upgrade without upgrading the basband (i think), but he would have to intentionally know what he's doing etc.
Chances are if its up to date its unlockable for the foreseable future.

True, you can upgrade to 2.2, keeping the 2.1 baseband using something like pwnage tool (can also downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1, with the exception of the baseband) But let's be honest, it's unlikely that the user has done that......
