I have a phone line which comes into the house but has never been used since I've owned it. Now with my imminent move in, I need to sort some sort of phone connection. Do I need to ring BT to get it reactivated or can I go straight to someone like sky and have one of their packages? Thanks

BT might still be doing the free connection thing, search google for it.

If not, it will be £125 for them to flick a switch, or if you go with Sky they do it for £25 I think.

If you are in a cable area, you dont need it (if you want Virgin)

If the line and BT socket is already in your house they will normally activate it for free. You only have to pay if there wasn't a BT line going to the property IIRC.

Mine was same when I moved in - line not active but could get a dial tone. Stupidly I left it for a year as had mobiles - a year later I try and line doesnt even have dial tone - ring to get it activated and they tell me its been disconnected at exchange as been inactive so long so wanted to charge me 125 connection, luckily I got a half price deal.

Strange, because in our old flat there was a BT line but when I plugged a phone in, no dial tone. We spoke to BT (on a mobile obviously LOL) and they activated the line for free? There is a Virgin Media socket in the flat so I think the previous occupant used them instead of BT.

It depends if the account was cancelled or the line was ceased.

If it was ceased it's expensive.
