A friend of mine was offered an iPhone today - 3G 16Gb, her friend in work bought it for £150 and it doesn't work on Vodafone, so she's trying to flog it for £100 to re-coop some money.
I told her to bring it round and I tried an o2 sim card in it, and it works fine, I didn't let on at the time, she asked If I could unblock it, if not, would I buy it off her. I offered her £50... could be useful as an iPod for the car, anyway i've now got it here, as I said I'd try unblock it for her. She said she'll think about it, as its a bit of money to lose....
How can I tell if its not just locked to o2? How can I tell if the IMEI number is blocked? If it's not nicked, surely it's worth a bit more if its not blocked via IMEI?
I always thought it was blocked on all networks when they get reported, so I have a little hope of it being genuine, just locked to a network

You can change the IMEI number, iirc it's illegal but it's easy to do, needs jailbreaking first though.

Before I did that report, I had a google and it looks very easy to do!
Also read that it is very illegal and you will be fined a hell of a lot of money and may even go to prison. So probably not worth doing
Just done a report on my old one which was lost/stolen, and it came back stolen. It must work then, result! Cheers Jamie.

Do you have to pay for Checkmend? You can put the IMEI number in on one of the mobile phone trade in sites and they checkmend it for you and tell you whether its stolen/lost/blocked for free.

Ah right, where? (Can be handy for any future reference).
Paid £1.99, twice.

iPhone's can be reported stolen and not blocked
Mobile trade sites don't normally tell you, they wait until you send it in, then tell you and don't give it back.

Its imposible to change an iphone 3g IMEI. My mrs' sister lost hers and then found it months later and it had been blocked. She rang the insurance company to tell them but because she changed her phone and insurer they were unable to unblock it for her. I spent hours looking into it on the net but I didnt find anything There was a piece of software that you could use on an iphone 2g with the very first couple of firmwares on but apple soon learnt about it and blocked it. BUT if you have found something sucessfull then I wouldnt mind a U2U about it mate
