got a 500gb external hard drive plugged in to my 360 for movies. i cant set up a wireless network sothis is the only way i can watch things on my tv.
some mp4 files work fine, other show up but i cant play them and some simply dont show up at all. ive got south park on there which plays off the hard drive if i plug it in my laptop but the folder is empty when i plug it in to my xbox

I know you said you can't connect to a wireless network, but does the xbox have internet access? Usually it would download the correct codec automatically.

i assumed that if i dont have the correct codec it wont play it but some of the files just dont show up at all

Must admit, even when it's connected online I encouter files that won't be recognised. I just leave winff converting them all to avi's and then it plays them no probs.
