Grandparetns just got a new electric fire one of these that hang on the wall and wanting to make a feature wall where it is. However they have that horrible tacky woodchip all over the place. Apart from a steamer and plenty of elbow grease what else is an easy solution to get this crap off? Rest of the room will be magnolia/white. It's not MY house, i'd be doing something completly different if it was me.

This was before we finsihed it all off, that's not the end result!

there really is no other option. I've always been told you shouldn't plaster over woodchip but thinking logically, you could "thistle bond it" first and I can't see why you couldn't then overskim it. I'd guess at that costing about Ł200 though as a tub of thistle bond it is about Ł50 so elbow grease maybe your answer

if you get any Tom,Dick or Harry plasterer in though, make sure they thistle bond it otherwise it'll be off the wall in 5 minutes - although I'd still be inclined to get it off the wall first. The reality is, in getting it off, you'll probably wreck the plaster anyway

Score it with a Stanley knife, soak it in water, leave for 30mins then go at it with a steamer and scrapper.

Don't plaster on top of paper, asking for trouble.

Surely doesn't matte what you put on top of the paper if the glue holding the paper to the wall fails?

thistle bond is a chemical prep, it sets back through to the sub layer. Used where the surface has poor adhesion, significantly high or significantly low porosity, or is unstable but its expensive.

Although, as I said above, I would still be inclined to spend the time and get it off the wall, primarily as the stuff is so expensive in the first place and secondly as if a job is worth doing, its worth doing right

Example 1:

Woodchip virtually welded to the wall; surface prepped with thistle bond

first coat of paint after skimming

same wall, post paper and it's still fine 4-5 years later

Example 2:
The poor plasterwork I had done that you may or may not remember my thread about; this was less than a week after my original plastering job

same room thistle bonded

That wall got tiled, probably the most risky wall given that the surface plaster was cracked and peeling. The weight of the tiles alone (had the surface only been prepped with a PVA mix) would definitely have brought the new plaster off.

Tiled

and its been fine for 4/5 years

However, I would still be inclined to try and stip it off first if you can and this is only in reference to woodchip with a million layers of paint on, not normal decorative wallpaper
