I'm looking to replace my 9 year old PC with a new laptop. I'm pretty much limiting myself to Dell as we've had a number of machines in the household which have never gone wrong and I understand the support is spot on.

The Dell website is very good at explaining what machines come with 3rd Gen Intel processors however other website, such as Ebuyer.com don't.

If I was to venture into the world of HP/Acer/Lenovo (I've also had a 2nd hand IBM laptop for ages from BigPockets and am impressed) for example, is there any way of telling if what seems like a good deal is actually old tech being sold off? I.e. 2nd Gen?

I'm looking to spend approx £500 - £550 and hope to get either 3rd Gen i5 or i7, as I'd like to do a bit of MTB video editing (and when I say edit, I mean stitch a few headcam runs together) or photo editing.

3rd Gen - http://www.ebuyer.com/441624-acer-aspire-v3-laptop-nx-ryfek-022 ?
3rd Gen - http://www.ebuyer.com/479910-lenovo-ideapad-z580-laptop-m81kauk ?

Also, would anyone care to explain the difference between a Intel Core i5-3230M 2.6GHz and Intel Core i5 3210M 2.5GHz apart from .1GHz?

That's a nice spec, but a resolution of 1366 x 768 on a 15" is just terrible.

Edit > Sorry, I'm mistaken. Apparently that's the standard res for 15" Windows laptops in that budget. Can't believe laptop screens haven't evolved more over the last 7-10 years.
Even my old 2006 MBP had a 1440 x 900 screen.

Just specced some again as still haven't sorted it and found some 17.3" full HD specs with i5 or i7 processor, at least 3.2 Ghz and 6gb or 8gb RAM.

And in budget

I got an acer v3-571 a couple of months ago. 8gb ram, i7 3630qm processor (2.4ghz up to 3.4), NVidia gt640m graphics card, 750gb hard drive, blu ray player, one usb 3 port. 15.6" screen, windows 8 (not a fan!).

Im very impressed with it so far, the other night I was ripping dvd's, editing photos in photoshop cs5, listening to music, browsing the web and doing an SD card full format all at the same time and didn't notice any let up in performance anywhere. Think I gave about £700 for it?..... worth every penny

Meh, I needed a laptop for space especially if I move out to a tiny flat, plus wanted portability to take to the Mrs. Don't necessarily need it for on a train or business meetings.
