Which is why I can upgrade to a 4s 16gb for nothing soon even though my current contract is only £32 with data

Don't see the point in waiting for new model as another will be along after that. If its a few weeks then that's different.

If they do end up calling their 6th phone 'iPhone 5' it'll be a fucking joke. By that standard the iPhone 4 should have been an iPhone 3.

By that standard the Corsa C should have been the Corsa E because the Nova and Corsa B both had facelift models

That's actually just supporting my statement. Opel / Vauxhall stuck with their numbering. Ie. A > A.1 > B > B.1 > C > etc.
Apple has counted the 3GS as a model in it's own, hence the 4S should be as well. Calling the 6th phone iPhone 5 is breaking their own pattern and I fucking hate inconsistencies like that.

Er
1 - iPhone,
2 - iPhone 3G,
3 - iPhone 3GS,
4 - iPhone 4,
5 - iPhone 4S
The number has no relation to the model year so why not call the 6th model the iPhone 5

Are you being serious?
1st = iPhone
2nd = 3G < = Second form factor, named by connection type
3rd = 3GS
4th = 4 < = Third form factor, named by installation number
5th = 4S
6th = 6 < = Fourth form factor (perhaps), named by installation number
Calling it 5 would break the pattern and make no sense, in the slightest. It's not the 5th phone, the 5th shape or has anything else to do with 5.

I don't really know what I was doing - I don't think they really need to be numbered do they? You go buy a July 2011 MacBook Air, rather than a MacBook Air 2 don't you.

Or MacBook Air 5 - didn't realise there had been so many iterations of it.

I had literally no idea a number after a product name could bother someone so much

Think it's a case of OCD to be honest.
And Ed, you make a good point by the way. They could easily just call it iPhone.

Am I missing something here? You're just repeating what Rob pointed out, that none of the names have beared an correlation to the sequence in which they have been released (with the exception of the 4th itteration being called the iPhone 4).
Its far more likely to be called the iPhone 5 (if they even number it) since it comes after the iPhone 4.

You're missing, that there is a reason behind all the numbers.
There would be no reason for calling the sixth instalment 5.
The second was called 3G because it had 3G.
The third 3GS because it was a 'S'peedy version of the 3G.
The fourth 4 because it was the fourth.
The fifth 4S because it was a 'S'peedy version of the 4.
The sixth 5 because... Well... Nothing!

Balling, youve got the exact same reasoning as me. i had this discussion on pistonheads and was accused of being autistic
the only phone with a number was the 4 because it was the 4th, if they number the next one it would be the 6 because its the 6th. if they call it the 5 it dicsounts the 4s as a whole new model, which would discount the 3gs as a new model meaning the 4 wasnt the 4th
