run it, keep it maintained to a high standard, few things such as air flow meters etc have a tendancy to go wrong..

save up and get a 1.4/1.6 with a bit more poke

Fitting a full exhaust system will make more differance than any air filter. When I had my 1.4 my mate fitted a full Mongoose system to his 1.2 and after that he pretty much kept up with me.

I have an induction kit on my 1.2 and it made about 0.8bhp difference.

I have a 1.2 first car and all, they aren't that bad! I went down the road of induction kits etc, i just run it standard now. I drilled my airbox and was filling up all the time, it was rinsing my cash. Ive got the car running standard engine set up now. And that is how it will stay until i get my MG. Yay

Doubt what you want.

After fitting his exhaust and pvd filter he could almost keep up with me, I would still pull away but there really wasn't a lot in it.

What suspension set up do you have? By improving the handling you will be able to corner quicker, thus effectively improving your performance.

You shouldn't get rubbing from a -30/-40mm drop.
