The misses has a BT Home Hub which as I understand it is a router and modem all in one, as it plugs directly into the telephone line. We previously had 2 powerline ethernet adaptors so we could at least get plugged in internet up in the bedroom/living room. However one has packed up.

Question is, if I bought another ADSL modem/router with wireless and plugged it into the telephone line which we have in the bedroom/living room, would it work if the Home Hub is still plugged in, in the study? Basically creating 2 wireless and ethernet locations in the house?

Can appreciate I could just buy another powerline ethernet adaptor but would really like wireless in the living room too.

P.S. I think it's ADSL I'm on about. I'm sure you know what I mean.

No, one modem and route it around your network.

It's quite a big house with solid walls full of moisture. The wireless gets no where apart from next door rooms. Just.

A wireless powerline adaptor is nearly £60 according to eBuyer. Mind you a 2nd ADSL, if it worked, wouldn't be much cheaper.

Easiest/best solution would probably be to replace the powerline adapter. If you need more than one port then get a simple ethernet switch and link that to the powerline adapter...

Ports aren't the issue, it's the wireless I'd rather have as only get 2G out here in the cuntry.

What about a wireless repeater?
Linksys WRT54's are dirt cheap off eBay, around £10 (i nabbed a few for a fiver), so even if you dotted a few around the house it'd still be cheaper than a new powerline. All it takes is to use custom firmware like DD-WRT but it's a five minute job to set each one up.

I've got one set up down stairs (router is up stairs in a office, front of house) to get the wireless out into the garden and it works really well. Only issue i've had is the connection from the Linksys is a bit flaky if the SSID on the Linksys is hidden, so my routers SSID is hidden but the Linksys' SSID isn't.
And yeah if you decide to go down that route (might be worth it just getting one if it's cheap and testing it, worse case you have a fairly decent router) drop us a U2U if you run into any problems.

Few links in using DD-WRT (firmware for Linksys etc) and setting it up as a repeater -

Confused.com.

Struggle to get wireless in the kitchen let alone stair well, so would need a fair few repeaters. It's annoying it isn't even that old. Just thick solid walls.

Basically there are a few custom firmwares for the Linksys WRT54 (some firmware support other routers like DLink, Belkin etc) series of routers and a lot of them allow you to convert the router into a simple wireless repeater. Only issue with the WRT54 is that they're pretty bulky.

A powerline plug might the easiest, but i think for the sake of £5/10 quid it might be worth seeing if you can provide a wireless signal upstairs etc
