Gf's old man has an original PS3 (plays ps2 games) and its started to run really slowly. He only uses it for GT5 and its become tediously slow in game.
Not his internet connection as its about 20mb, think its just generally slow. Read about an operations menu however the console won't boot into it (hold power, release etc)
Thinking of backing up, formatting and restoring
Now dont want to loose anything he's downloaded, nor do I want to fuck it up. anything I should take into consideration ?

copy all game data and saves data, if you're worried just copy everything from the game menu!
Could be worth giving it a hoover at the back to make sure it's not clogged up and overheating as well
