Got a hot air rework station, just got a chance to give it a quick go.
It's got a soldering iron as well, the holder is broken though and I'm waiting on a replacement coming through.
Gave it a go on a damaged board, quite impressed, looking forward to trying on something I have to be more careful with.

Naa it's poe and the power regulator blew up, I'd had a failed repair on it before so it was purely for testing purposes.

Do you need to heat sink the chip?

No, if you are doing it properly you should be able to do it without damaging the chip.
You also get nozzles that have the chip blanked out in the middle so the air only gets to the legs.

If you look at the datasheets for most IC's then they seem to be able to withstand 200 degrees for several minutes these days because that's how they're manufactured. Lead-less solder and all.

would need standoffs on the BGA's to stop the balls collapsing to much and shorting.
We have a BGA rework station at work but its all programmed for device size, array paste type and board material.
Watch the ceramic cappacitors they are prone to cracking when using an iron, we only use hot air gun like you have to re-seat these devices. (thermal shock)
