c20xe is in the car now, attached to trans but with no head on it.
i want to leave the gearbox so i don't have to fuck about with the suspension/shafts/gear linkage, but dunno how to get the engine out on it own.
especially as there's no head on it, hence no lifting eyes. i could put in some old head boltsand chain off of them, but whats the easiest way to get the lump out?
cheers

I don't think there is enough room to get the engine out without taking the gearbox with it as the input shaft is quite long...
I would put rope around the block and lower it to the floor using a crane personally...

there are poeple that will tell you to get it out the top... but in my experience of trying to do this it just wasted 3 hours of my time and made me ended up removing the whole lot out the bottom...

i've read something about removing the input shaft to enable access to take the engine out either way.
bottom was easy enough for the whole engine and gbox assembly, but i'm not sure if top would be a better idea for just the block.

just take the gbox out.
Attach the crane to the front of the corsa (willay style) and pump.

but if i can split the lump from the box it'll save much more fucjing about because i wont then need to take out suspension, shafts, arb, or rest the gear linkage.

split ball joints, pull shafts out and unbolt box. A lot easier than trying to seperate the block from box in the car... and as for putting a block back in with the box already in place not a chance

i took just the block out the top. Its quite easy if you remove the alternator and bottom pulley. i also jacked the gearbox up so it came out at an angle rather than sliding it left then up.

so did you have to do anything with the input shaft then Adam?
I'm sure i've read of other people doing it without disturbing the box.

do it the same way i did thunda's, keep undoing bolts till you hear a bang, engine will be out
you will need to pull out the input shaft if you want to do it the hard way, take off the end plate, remove the circlip, then the 12 spline bolt, then pull the shaft out. then undo the bell housing bolts and the covers, you may have to undo the bolts from the clutch cover to flywheel.

i didnt touch the gearbox, input shafts, coverplates or any of that shit, apart from the loosening the mounts.

just been trying this today and it's a cunt.
i'm probably going about it all arse about face, but i think it would have been easier to drop the lot out of the bottom and diassamble the whoile front.
couldn't get it out the top, so dropped the o/s tie bar and put it down that way.
it's done but i'm so vexxed now.
debating wether to drop the box to get the new lump in or keep battling away at this method.
